Mandaluyong City is home to the Abalos and Gonzales families of politics. And they’re seeking to retain their places once again in the City Hall and Congress in the 2010 Elections.
The ruling party, Lakas-Kampi-CMD, makes its strong presence known in the Tiger City, as incumbent Mayor Benhur Abalos, Vice Mayor Rene Sta. Maria and Rep. Neptali Gonzales II seek re-election. Gonzales II stand unopposed. However, on April 12, Gonzales defected to the Liberal Party.
The Aksyon Demokratiko ticket, although lesser known than the Lakas-Kampi-CMD candidates, looks forward for a major upset, and a new force in Mandaluyong politics, if they win in this year’s elections. Leading the team is the tandem of Erbert Buan and Danilo de Guzman.
However, Buan was arrested after a buy-bust operation by police last January 30 for selling drugs.
Names in italics are incumbent candidates running for re-election.

The Abalos and Gonzales families have produced former mayors and representatives, and has even alternated in holding these positions. Case in point: Gonzales II was the city’s representative from 1995 to 2004, then Abalos Jr. took over from 2004 to 2007. Gonzales II was re-elected in 2007, and here he is in 2010 seeking a second term.
In addition, former COMELEC Commissioner Benjamin Abalos Sr. was Mayor of the city from 1988 to 1997, then his son Benhur was elected as Mayor from 1997 to 2004, and from 2007 until the present. The mayor of Mandaluyong from 2004 to 2007? Neptali Gonzalez II.
