2010 Elections

How Lakas-KAMPI-CMD voted yesterday, and more

As revealed in an article from ABS-CBNNews.com, here is a summary of how the Lakas-KAMPI-CMD National Executive Commitee secret balloting went:

* The committee consists of 65 members, including party chairman Pres. GMA
* Fifty-two were present on Wednesday, September 16
* Four did not vote, two ballots were spoiled; one absent member sent his vote | 52 – 4 – 2 + 1 = 47
* Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro got 42 votes
* MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando got only 5 votes

Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro has vowed to step down from his post “in due time” after being fielded as the administration’s candidate for the 2010 Elections. This, after Akbayan Rep. Risa Hontiveros urged Teodoro to resign “in order to insulate the military from partisanship”.

Somewhere in the news, I have heard that the Executive Committee Meeting done by Lakas-KAMPI-CMD yesterday to field Teodoro as their standard-bearer does not comply with the Omnibus Election Code.

Section 80 of the Code says:

“It shall be unlawful for any person, whether or not a voter or candidate, or for any party, or association of persons, to engage in an election campaign or partisan political activity except during the campaign period: Provided, That political parties may hold political conventions or meetings to nominate their official candidates within thirty days before the commencement of the campaign period and forty-five days for Presidential and Vice-Presidential election.

With the official start of the campaign period for President, Vice-President andSenators set to February 9, 2010, all political prties could only start their conventions or meetings at most 45 days before this date, or on December 26, 2009.

However, Teodoro himself has stated that he was selected via a party consensus and the party may still change their choice.

Vice President Noli de Castro has stated that he is no longer interested to run under the administration party, saying that doing so is “a kiss of death.”

Meanwhile, the Nacionalista Party’s standard-bearer Manny Villar is considering de Castro as his running-mate for the 2010 Elections. De Castro is a friend of Villar.

Jose de Venecia of the break-away Lakas Originals reiterated that the nomination of Teodoro as the Lakas-KAMPI-CMD’s presidential candidate is “null and void” until COMELEC decides on the petition he filed regarding the legality of the party merger.

In other news, Bayani Fernando may be breaking away from the Lakas-KAMPI-CMD Party after failing to clinch the nomination. Fernando was “stunned” and “disappointed” after not being selected yesterday to be the party’s candidate for the Presidential Elections.

Fernando has declared he would keep his “options open”, as he is hell-bent on running for President. Some are saying that he may be joining the Lakas Originals and be its standard-bearer.

Jesus is Lord Movement leader and presidential aspirant Bro. Eddie Villanueva has expressed his sympathy for Fernando, saying that what happened yesterday “is a result of Fernando’s loyalty to the party.”

It shall be unlawful for any person, whether or not a voter or candidate, or for any party, or association of persons, to engage in an election campaign or partisan political activity except during the campaign period: Provided, That political parties may hold political conventions or meetings to nominate their official candidates within thirty days before the commencement of the campaign period and forty-five days for Presidential and Vice-Presidential election.
